Tomekia Reed has coached at six different schools in her relatively brief career. After all of those stops, she’s finally coming home.
The Jackson native and former Hinds Community College star was hired on Friday as the women’s head basketball coach at her alma mater.
While at Hinds, Reed led the MACJC in rebounding in 2001, with 19 per game. She was the MACJC’s most valuable player that season, and went on to play at Georgia Southwestern State University. After graduating in 2003, she went into coaching and has spent the past decade-plus on a whirlwind coaching tour of southeastern programs on nearly every level of competition.
Reed has been an assistant coach at South Georgia Technical College, Jackson State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech and, most recently, the University of New Orleans.
“I am grateful for the support I have received over the last couple of days. I can remember from my playing days at Hinds in Utica that we were a family,” Reed said in a statement. “Everyone was a part of this family — from the students, to the coaches, to the professors, as they all cared about the well-being of the students. I am looking forward to rejoining my family.”
