Vicksburg’s annual street party wound up Friday night as crowds packed into downtown Vicksburg for an evening of food, fun, games and music.
Gates opened at 6 p.m. but the crowed began trickling in about an hour later when The Chill played their set on the North Stage.
Vicksburg native Summer Brewer and her family came back to her hometown for the annual festival.
“We came to hear The Chill,” she said “My parents used to own the Biscuit Company, and they are friends.”
Her 3-year-old son Carson seemed to care less about The Chill and more about participating in the family-friendly fun of many bounce houses.
Chris Landry, who lives in a loft apartment above Frederick’s, took the rare opportunity to plop down in a beanbag chair in the middle of the Washington and China streets while sipping a beer.
“It’s fantastic. I like where I live, but I feel this is the best use I’m going to get out of the place all year,” Landry said.
Rochella Simpson of Jackson brought her son, 15-year-old Ivra Simpson, and goddaughter, 7-year-old Zaybrianna Knight and was anticipating Silk’s headlining performance at 10 p.m.
While his mom was recording with her cellphone, Ivra was taking a spin in a gyroscope ride, spinning him this way and that as he smiled brightly.
“It was crazy,” he said, still a little wobbly from the ride.
The family also planned to eat dinner from a variety of festival fare offered up by street vendors.
“It’s going to be hard to decide,” Simpson said.
They had never attended RiverFest before and hoped to make a weekend of the festival.
“If the weather’s nice, we could come back out,” she said. “It’s something nice to do for the weekend to have some fun.”
RiverFest activities are slated to start at 8 a.m. Saturday with the inaugural DiamondJacks Rhythm Run at RiverFest 5K run and walk and 1-mile fun run for children at 8 a.m., followed by a GospelFest at the South Stage. An assortment of arts and crafts vendors are set to line downtown for the morning along with other free entertainment.
Weather could be a problem though. The National Weather Service is calling for a 90 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day. The storms are expected to dump between a half to ¾ of an inch of rain across the county.
For nighttime events, gates are set to open at 6 p.m. with music on the North Stage at China and Washington to begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.
Saturday’s headliner will be Texas-born and raised country singer and multi-instrumentalist Craig Wayne Boyd, who was the seventh season winner of the television show “The Voice” in 2014. Boyd and his band will lead a list 12 musical acts performing at this year’s RiverFest.
