With another big comeback, the Vicksburg Missy Gators extended their season and made a little history.
Hannah Emerson bolted from third on a ground ball, and slid under the tag for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Missy Gators beat Center Hill 10-9 in Game 2 of their Class 5A playoff series.
The Missy Gators (10-13) swept the series. It’s the first time in school history that Vicksburg has won a playoff series.
“You look at it as a stepping stone,” VHS coach Brian Ellis said. “You’re not looked at any more as one of those teams that’s an automatic win. We won the district last year but didn’t win in the playoffs. Then winning in the playoffs is a big step.”
The Missy Gators overcame a three-run deficit to win Game 1 on Thursday, then climbed out of an even bigger hole Friday.
Center Hill led 6-0 in the fourth inning, and 9-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Missy Gators used a pu pu platter of walks and errors to score three runs to tie the game. Then Torrey Daniels hit a grounder to short. Emerson, who was on third base, ran home and slid in safely as Center Hill’s catcher dropped the ball.
The play sent VHS on to face New Hope next week. Game 1 of the best-of-three series is Monday at 4 p.m. at Vicksburg’s Softball Swamp. Games 2 and 3 are Tuesday at New Hope beginning at 4 p.m.
