PEARL — For 3 1/2 decades, Ole Miss and Mississippi State have journeyed to the Jackson area in the middle of the season to play each other in a non-conference game.
Whether it’s been the Mayor’s Trophy or now the Governor’s Cup, none of the previous 35 meetings had been this one-sided.
Connor Cloyd went 3-for-6 with four RBIs, Colby Bortles drove in two runs, and Ole Miss thumped Mississippi State 11-1 in the 2015 Governor’s Cup game at Trustmark Park. It was the biggest margin of victory in the game’s 36-year history.
Ole Miss (24-22) finished with 15 hits. Bortles had two, Sikes Orvis had two and scored twice, and Austin Knight went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
“We had a difficult night throwing strikes and staying ahead of hitters,” Mississippi State coach John Cohen said. “They had some really good at-bats and made things tough. It’s a quick turnaround and we have to get ready for a big series with LSU this weekend.”
Ole Miss pitcher Sam Weathersby (3-1) threw seven shutout innings. He walked one batter, struck out three and scattered six hits.
“I was just trying to go inning by inning, working on that inning and just giving us a chance,” Weathersby said. “I was just trying to work the zone and let our defense do the work, and they did that behind me tonight.”
Mississippi State reliever Ross Mitchell picked up the midweek start, but lasted just 2 1/3 innings. He gave up four runs on five hits and walked two batters. The Bulldogs (23-22) used five other pitchers to get through the game.
Southern Miss 6, Alabama 2
Chase Scott and Dylan Burdeaux homered, and Southern Miss (24-16-1) beat Alabama (23-21) in a game halted by rain in the eighth inning.
Scott went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, and Burdeaux hit a two-run shot in the sixth.
Nick Dawson was 2-for-3 with an RBI double for Southern Miss, and Matt Durst finished with one RBI and one run scored.
Cord Cockrell (3-0) allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings to get the win. He walked three batters, struck out three, and gave up six hits.
LSU 6, Alcorn State 1
Seven LSU pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter as the top-ranked Tigers (38-7) beat Alcorn State (11-37).
Danny Zardon drove in three runs for LSU, while Chris Chinea and Andrew Stevenson both were 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Scotty Peavey was 2-for-4 with a solo home run for Alcorn.
