South Panola blanks WC again to sweep series

In most playoff series, the way Warren Central shut down South Panola would have resulted in an easy sweep and a victory celebration.
Unfortunately for the Lady Vikes, South Panola did the same thing to them — only a little bit better.
South Panola pitcher Nichole Fullilove shut out Warren Central for the second straight day. She struck out 12 batters and allowed just two hits as the Lady Tigers finished a two-game sweep in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs by winning 2-0 on Tuesday.
In the series, Warren Central struck out 30 times against Fullilove, did not score a run, and only had four hits.
That lack of offense spoiled two outstanding pitching performances by Warren Central’s Darby Gain. The senior took a shutout into the eighth inning in Game 1 on Monday, only to lose 5-0.
In Game 2, Gain allowed two hits, one walk and struck out four in six innings.
The Lady Vikes committed six errors in the series, and only one of the seven runs South Panola scored was earned.
“She was a very good pitcher. But Darby did a great job pitching and we just didn’t hit behind her,” Warren Central coach Dana McGivney said. “(Gain) was awesome. Can’t ask for anything more from her or a better pitching performance from anyone.”
South Panola took advantage of two errors by the Lady Vikes to score a run in the third inning, and tacked on another run in the sixth when Mallory Myers stole home.
The Lady Vikes got a runner on in the seventh inning, but hit into a double play to end the game and the season.
Warren Central finished with a 16-8 record and won a playoff series for the first time since 2007 by beating Olive Branch last week.
The team endured an up-and-down stretch to finish the season, however, and ran into a good pitcher at the wrong time. In their last 10 games, the Lady Vikes scored two runs or fewer six times.
“We came back and hit the ball well against Olive Branch. Then against South Panola we went back to what we were doing before that,” McGivney said. “It’s been up and down, but it’s been a good year. To win a series was good for us. Hopefully we can build on that.”
