Forget being dangerous. St. Aloysius is starting to look like a juggernaut.
The Lady Flashes scored all of their runs in the third inning Tuesday, and completed a one-sided sweep of Salem by winning Game 2 of their Class 1A playoff series 13-0.
“We went three-and-out the first inning and I said ‘Oh no,’” St. Al coach Candice Reeder said. “The third inning we got up there and it was just hit after hit after hit.”
The Lady Flashes advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and are looking more and more like a state championship contender.
They’ve outscored Ethel and Salem 38-7 while sweeping both series.
St. Al will next play the winner between Bogue Chitto and Nanih Waiya beginning Friday night at Bazinsky Park. Bogue Chitto leads Nanih Waiya 1-0 in that second-round series.
“The girls have finally proven to themselves what I knew they could do all along,” Reeder said. “If we continue down this road, we’re capable of winning it all.”
If it plays like it has the last two weeks, St. Al certainly has a chance to make a run at a state championship.
It scored 10 runs in the second inning of Game 1 against Salem, then had the 13-run inning in Game 2.
Jordan McDonald, Brooklyn Richards, Allie Willis and Hannah Ashley all had two hits and scored two runs in the clincher.
Richards was 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Willis also was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
In all, 20 batters came to the plate in the third inning.
“We hadn’t been hitting consistently and stringing hits together and scoring runs until now. Hopefully we can keep this up going into Friday and Saturday,” Reeder said.
Stephanie Schoonover allowed four hits and two walks in five innings to get the win. She struck out two batters.
St. Al did not commit an error, and has only two in its four playoff victories.
“Our defense is very strong,” Reeder said. “Steph has been doing a great job, but without solid defense behind you, you can’t do much on the mound.”
