Hinds exacts revenge on Southwest

RAYMOND — Two weeks ago, Southwest Mississippi swept a doubleheader from Hinds Community College.
Clearly, it was time for some payback.
Hinds exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first inning Saturday, and cruised to a 13-3 win in Game 2 of an MACJC playoff series at Joe G. Moss Field.
Hinds, the top-ranked team in the country, swept the best-of-three series by outscoring Southwest 27-6 in the two games.
“I came out to practice Wednesday, and they really didn’t need us coaches here,” Hinds coach Sam Temple said with a laugh. “They were pretty motivated. It was just a different atmosphere in the ballpark. Southwest has a great program over there, but I didn’t need to give them any motivational speeches about playing this series.”
Hinds (38-5) won for the ninth time in 10 games and will host the four-team MACJC state tournament beginning Thursday. Disposing of Southwest (20-24) was the first step toward a state title and, the Eagles hope, much more.
“This huge class of sophomores know what time of year it is. They know how to flip the switch. There’s no doubt they’ve been churning away trying to get to the playoffs,” Temple said.
Jordan Washam hit a grand slam to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead in Game 2, and they never trailed again. Fourteen batters came to the plate in the first inning and six of them got hits.
It was a similar script to Game 1, when Southwest jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Hinds scored 14 runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
“Once you do that to a team, it’s hard to come back. They didn’t stop, but when you put 13 runs on somebody it’ll hurt their feelings,” said Hinds catcher Hunter Austin, a former Warren Central star who went 0-for-4.
Quade Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored for Hinds. Jonathan Washam drove in three runs, and Tyler Cox and Casey Echols were both 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Southwest only had two hits. L.D. Coney drove in a pair of runs with a fifth-inning single.
Houston Case started and went four innings for Hinds, and was charged with all three runs. Graham Ahlrich and Austin Sanders finished up with three innings of shutout relief.
