St. Al goes for third state title

Laura Phillips has two gold medals in her trophy case. It’s the bronze one she’s a little sick of looking at.
Phillips, a St. Aloysius senior, has finished in the top four each of the last three years at the MHSAA girls Class I state tournament. She was third last year at Clear Creek Golf Course.
Even though St. Al won the team state championship in 2013 and 2014, and will go for the threepeat beginning Monday at Natchez Trace Golf Club in Saltillo, Phillips makes no secret that she’d like a shiny gold medalist medallion to go with all of those team titles.
“I definitely want to get better than third this year. I’m a little tired of bronze,” Phillips said.
Although individual glory has eluded her, Phillips and fellow seniors Anna Fletcher and Beth Newman have guided the Lady Flashes to the highest heights of the Mississippi high school golf world.
The trio joined together as eighth-graders for St. Al’s first girls golf team and finished second in the team standings in 2012. They broke through to win in 2013 and repeated last year when Fletcher finished second and Phillips third overall.
“I definitely think we push each other, considering we shoot around the same score,” Phillips said. “We always want to shoot lower than in past tournaments.”
Now it’s time for one last ride.
The Lady Flashes won the 2013 championship by 12 shots and last year beat Our Lady Academy by 33. They’re a favorite to win again this week based largely on their depth.
The top two scores on each team count for the team title. With Phillips and Fletcher likely to be among the leaders, and Newman not far behind to pick up the slack if either struggles, the Lady Flashes have plenty of firepower in the lineup.
No matter what happens with her own performance, that’s something Phillips said she’ll be happy with.
“It feels great to say that we’ve won two state championships in a row, and it’ll be even better to say we won three state championships in a row,” Phillips said. “That would be great to leave my senior year knowing we did come out as the best.”
