St. Aloysius’ terrific trio rode off into the sunset with a trifecta on Tuesday.
Seniors Anna Fletcher, Laura Phillips and Beth Newman, who helped start the school’s girls golf program as eighth-graders, clinched their third consecutive MHSAA Class I girls team champpionship with a dominating performance at Natchez Trace Golf Club in Saltillo.
St. Al totaled 333 shots as a team and beat runner-up Our Lady Academy by 56 strokes. It was the biggest margin of victory for the Lady Flashes of their three state championships.
“It’s really great. Hopefully we can get rings,” Phillips said. “It feels good to be state champions. Not many people can say they got to do that.”
St. Al’s coronation seemed a foregone conclusion after it took a 26-shot lead in Monday’s first round. It didn’t do anything on Tuesday to let anyone think of making a comeback.
Fletcher shot a second-round 79 to finish third in the individual standings and Phillips an 81 to finish fourth. Newman shot 93 on Tuesday and 195 for the tournament to finish sixth. Only the top two scores count toward the team total.
Besides St. Al’s trio, only four other golfers broke 200 for the tournament.
“We knew the second day was going to be easy going,” said Phillips, who shot a 168 for the tournament to tie with OLA’s Callee Breland. “The second day, I guess we were working on our individual scores. The second day was more of a focus on your day, and the team score will come together.”
Nettleton’s Riley Mayhew beat Tristan Cooley of Sumrall in a playoff to win medalist honors. Both finished at 158 in regulation.
Mayhew shot a 74 — the lowest round of the tournament — on Tuesday to make up a four-shot deficit and force the playoff.
Fletcher, Phillips and Newman all bettered their scores in the second round, but never got close to challenging for the individual state championship.
Fletcher entered the day six shots off the lead, and finished at 165. Phillips was seven shots back entering the day and finished 10 back. Newman was 37 off the pace.
The Lady Flashes, though, had no peers when it came to teamwork. St. Patrick won four consecutive Class I titles from 2008-12 when girls golf first became a championship sport, and St. Al has won all of them since.
“I’m just proud of the girls,” St. Al coach Liz Fletcher said. “They wanted to threepeat and they’ve done that. You couldn’t ask for anything better.”
