OXFORD — No matter how many times Mississippi State mounted a comeback Friday night, Ole Miss was there to answer.

Mississippi State hacked away at deficits of six and eight runs, but never could come all the way back and lost for the second straight night to its archrival, 13-10 in Oxford.

The teams combined for 30 hits and used 10 pitchers.

Sikes Orvis and J.B. Woodman homered for Ole Miss (27-24, 13-13 Southeastern Conference) and Wes Rea went deep for Mississippi State (24-26, 8-18).

Ole Miss scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, then plated five in the fifth after the Bulldogs had cut it to 7-4.

Mississippi State scored four times in the seventh to get within 13-10, but had a runner thrown out at the plate and couldn’t get any closer.

“We were aggressive,” said Orvis, who was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. “We took the first punch and brought the fight to them, which is what you want out of your offense. We wanted to come out and put runs up, and we did a good job of doing that tonight.”

J.B. Woodman and Nic Perkins drove in two runs apiece for Ole Miss, and Will Golsan was 2-for-5 with three runs scored.

Gavin Collins and Luke Reynolds drove in two runs apiece for Mississippi State, and Jacob Robson was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Southern Miss 1, Charlotte 0

HATTIESBURG — Cody Carroll, Luke Lowery and Ryan Milton combined on a five-hit shutout, and Southern Miss beat Charlotte 1-0 Friday night.

Southern Miss (29-16-1, 14-10 Conference USA) won its seventh consecutive game. Three of the last four have been shutouts.

Southern Miss set a school record with its eighth shutout of the season.

The only run of the game came in the fifth inning. Austin Roussel reached on an error to start the inning, was bunted to second and went to third on a ground out before scoring on Connor Barron’s two-out single.

Charlotte pitcher Sean Geoghegan (5-5) allowed three hits and two walks in seven innings, but took the loss.
