PEARL — It turns out Leon can do everything.

The Vicksburg High junior picked up a surprising win in the 110 meter hurdles, defended his title in the 300 meter hurdles, and then anchored the winning 4×400 meter relay to cap off a spectacular day at the MHSAA Class 5A boys track meet on Friday.

Miles was the defending Class 5A champion in the 300 hurdles, and a heavy favorite to repeat. He did that by clocking a time of 38.08 seconds — short of the state record of 37.34 seconds set by Cleveland’s Antonius Dotson in 1988, but still a second and a half better than second-place finisher Kevin Ratliff of Canton.

Ratliff finished in 39.52 seconds.

“Close enough,” Miles said.

The 110 meter hurdles were a stunner, even to Miles.

He had finished fifth at last year’s state meet and admitted in the days leading up to this year’s event that it was an “off and on” race for him. He was clearly “on” Friday.

Miles clocked a time of 12.47 seconds to beat Germantown’s Nigel Knott and Oxford’s D.J. Metcalf in a race decided at the wire. Knott finished in 12.53 seconds and Metcalf in 12.69.

“Big shocker. I did not expect to win the 110 at all. Not that I didn’t have faith in myself, but I knew Nigel was physically faster than me. So when I came across in first place, I was shocked,” Miles said.

Miles said a fast start and one misstep by Knott opened the door for him to win.

“I reacted quicker at the start than I usually do,” Miles said. “Then when he hit a hurdle, I knew I had him.”

Miles was happy to bring home three gold medals, and defend his title in the 300 hurdles. The victory in the 110, however, was the highlight of his day.

“I haven’t won much of the 110. But the 300, I knew I had that race because I had it all season,” Miles said after winning the 300. “Two state titles right now isn’t so bad.”

The rest of Vicksburg’s contingent had a far tougher day than Miles.

Jarrod Squire finished fifth in the 400 meters and Quincy Brown was eighth in the high jump. The 4×100 meter relay team finished fifth.

Squire, Miles, Jay Stirgus and Darius Tucker did put a nice bow on the meet by winning the day’s final event, the 4×400 relay, with a time of 3:23.51.

That put the Gators into a tie with Gautier for fifth place in the team standings with 39 points. Oxford won the meet with 117 points.
