For two weeks, Southern Miss had been winning games with outstanding pitching that locked down opponents.
They didn’t get that on Saturday, but they did keep on winning.
Michael Sterling scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the 11th inning, and the Golden Eagles won an 11-10 slugfest with Charlotte in Hattiesburg.
It was the eighth consecutive win for Southern Miss (30-16-1, 15-10 Conference USA). The 10 runs it allowed matched the total its opponents had scored in the previous seven games.
Charlotte (17-26, 10-16) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning and led 6-2 in the fourth before Southern Miss started its comeback.
Dylan Burdeaux hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, Nick Dawson’s RBI single in the fifth tied it, and the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the sixth to take a 10-8 lead.
Charlotte tied it in the eighth inning, but Southern Miss finally put together a rally in the 11th to steal the win.
Sterling was hit by a pitch to lead off the 11th, and was bunted to second. Connor Barron followed with an infield hit. Charlotte first baseman Logan Sherer made an errant throw to pitcher Matt Hokey at the bag, and Sterling hustled home with the winning run.
Barron finished the game 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored for Southern Miss, Dawson drove in two runs and Matt Durst was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Brett Netzer was 5-for-6 with four runs scored for Charlotte.
