Lineup puzzle PCA’s priority in spring game

At some positions, Porters Chapel Academy seems pretty well set for the future.
It’s got a quarterback. There’s a couple of running backs who look promising, and some guys who will obviously be linemen.
On a small team, however, most of them will also play somewhere else. Figuring out where has been the objective for coach Wayne Lynch and his staff, and they’ll get their last, best look tonight when the Eagles play their spring jamboree at Millsaps College in Jackson.
PCA will play a series of three 24-play scrimmages against Central Hinds, Lamar School and Clinton Christian beginning at 5 p.m.
“We’re really just trying to get a feel for the team in general. See what we have and get an idea of where people will be playing,” Lynch said before Monday’s practice, the team’s last of the spring. “We’re going to move people around in the spring game and look at them and see what they’re capable of.”
PCA finished 2-8 last season but still made the MAIS Class A playoffs. All three of its top running backs are graduating, as is the quarterback. All of those players doubled as linebackers and defensive backs, so there’s plenty of positions up for grabs.
Quarterback, however, is not.
Junior Patrick Minor, last year’s backup, will move into the starting role this season. He saw enough playing time in 2014 and is a good enough athlete for Lynch to express total confidence in him.
“He’s going to be one of our biggest assets. He’s a hard runner with the football and throws the ball well. We’re looking for big things out of him,” Lynch said.
At running back, Garrett Hutchins, Brandon Brister, Glenn Alan Kittrell and Michael Brewer are all in the mix to replace a trio of backs who split carries last season.
Lynch said Hutchins and Brister will get the start tonight and get plenty of opportunities as the offense relies on a basic power-I attack.
“We keep them fresh the best we can. We’re hoping two out of the four will emerge and take over the starting role for now,” Lynch said.
Of the running back quartet, Hutchins will be a junior in the fall and the rest sophomores. It’s part of a youth movement that started last season, when a number of underclassmen were called upon to fill in for injured players and shore up a thin roster.
That experience will help, Lynch said.
“A lot of these younger guys last year played up with us and played a lot of linebacker, so we’re pretty strong in the linebacker corps,” Lynch said. “We’re just young. All around, we’re young. We’ve got two seniors and the rest are underclassmen. We’ve got a couple of eighth-graders we’re pulling up. They all work hard, they all got some playing experience last year, so we feel good about it.”
