Aggies stifle Ole Miss

Ole Miss had already secured its spot in the Southeastern Conference Tournament thanks to a late-season surge and a five-game winning streak.

Good thing. It’s looking like this might be a long weekend.

Grayson Long struck out 12 batters in seven innings, Andrew Vinson pitched two innings of shutout relief, and No. 6 Texas A&M snapped Ole Miss’ winning streak with a 4-0 win Thursday in Oxford.

Long and Vinson combined to hold the Rebels to two hits. Long walked three batters and Vinson one. Vinson also had four strikeouts.

“That is the best Grayson has looked this year. We needed a strong outing from him to set the tone for the weekend and heading into the tournament,” Texas A&M coach Rob Childress said. “He had great command of his pitches and was tough to hit. He got even better when Ole Miss got guys in scoring position.”

Ryne Birk hit a solo home run for Texas A&M (43-9, 18-9 SEC), and Taylor Logan was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Austin Knight and J.B. Woodman each hit a double for Ole Miss (29-25, 14-14).

The Aggies scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to gain the upper hand in an otherwise tight game.

Ole Miss starter Christian Trent (7-6) allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings. He gave up six hits, struck out six, and didn’t walk a batter.

“That was competitive, championship baseball,” Childress said. “That was the best we’ve played defensively and on the mound in a few weeks. Offensively, we had good at-bats and got hits in key situations.”
