“Tonight was a game of psychology,” Mississippi State coach John Cohen said. “In all of the winnable moments of this game, we failed miserably.”

The loss, coupled with Georgia’s 10-1 win over Arkansas, officially eliminated Mississippi State (24-28, 8-20 Southeastern Conference) from contention for the SEC Tournament.

The Bulldogs and Volunteers (22-25, 9-18) will play twice more this weekend. The Vols can still earn a tournament berth, but Mississippi State is playing out the string.

“We’re not making this bigger than it is,” Tennessee coach Dave Serrano said. “We know what we have created to this point. No matter what happens with other teams in this conference, I just want to go out with a good feeling for these guys.”

Mississippi State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning Thursday, but sputtered badly after that. It drew five walks in the first three innings, but only scored the one run.

Lee’s solo home run tied the game in the second inning, and Tennessee took the lead for good in the third on another solo homer by Senzel.

It was Senzel’s fourth home run of the season, and third in his last three games. He struck again in the fourth inning, delivering a two-run single to make it 5-1.

Jordan Rodgers also had an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Mississippi State got a run in the eighth inning when Jake Vickerson doubled and scored on a wild pitch, but it was too little, too late.

The Bulldogs lost their fourth consecutive game, and for the 16th time in 19 games.

Tennessee has won four of its last five.
