Eating my way through Vicksburg

When I got into journalism, I always thought it would be fun to combine two of my passions: writing and food.

That dream came to a screeching halt when I realized that in order to be a food critic I actually had to be critical.

I don’t like artificial banana flavoring, but other than that, it’s game on.

Though I don’t often write about food, I still do plenty of taste testing around town.

Moving to Vicksburg has really been one big, new food adventure.

As many local Ole Miss fans and alumni know, it was hard to leave Oxford and with it, Rice & Spice, Soulshine Pizza and Big Bad Breakfast, but I’ve picked up some new favorites while eating my way though Vicksburg.

I think I most often frequent KJ’s River Town Grille, partially because it’s walking distance from my house.

I was going to mention how much I love their Sunday brunch — with bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys — but there’s really not much I don’t love. From the fish tacos to the lobster roll, this isn’t a place where I order a usual because everything is just so good.

After spending a summer in Washington D.C., I fell in love with a new form of dining: tapas bars. I love eating small plates after small plates, and my favorite in Vicksburg come from The Wine House.

I would be remiss not to mention a new favorite, Atami Japanese Grill. My fiancée and I have split the sushi combo number eight a few times. I don’t know what’s in it, but I know it’s good.

Nothing beats the simple home cooking of some of my lunchtime favorites: Main Street Market Cafe, Martin’s at Midtown and The Tomato Place (their smoothies are delicious).

When I’m looking for pizza, Billy’s Italian Restaurant is the place to go. Red pepper flakes piled on to cheese pizza — I think I know what’s for lunch.

After hearing absolutely rave reviews since its grand opening Wednesday, I can’t wait to add 10 South to my rotations of great eats in Vicksburg. If it’s anything like its sister restaurant Roca, I know it will be fantastic.

I’ve also been meaning to dine at Rowdy’s and Klondyke. If the food at those places is as good as the owners are nice, I know I’ll be in good shape.

Until then, maybe I should work on improving my own cooking skills.
