Relay for Life of Warren County wrapped up their event by reviewing the funds they raised, giving out awards and looking to future endeavors. It is on track to exceed their goal of $47,719 for the year.

“It went extremely well,” Scarlet Fowler, community manager at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, said. “We were able to show the community that we are rebuilding a quality event. I was really satisfied with the participation from the community. I could not be more thankful for our committee and Vicksburg High School for helping us pull it off.”

On the night of the event $13,000 was raised by the teams onsite from their activity booths. Ticket admission to the relay was $2, which raised a total of $1,800 from the 900 spectators.

They are on track to reach their goal of $47,719 for the year. Currently their event season net earnings, which end on Aug. 31, stands at $31,063.91. They project to hit $50, 705.36 by the end of the calendar year, in part, because of the Celebrity Waiter fundraiser put on by Ameristar Casino in the fall that is expected to make $19,000.

During the relay, 54 people took the survivors lap. There were 26 teams registered to participate in the walk.

Team MJ received an award for best tent décor, and Mutual Credit Union earned the most spirited award.

The Vicksburg Post was honored with the new team award, while DiamondJacks received the most money-raised award. DiamondJacks was also named most valuable team for raising the most money on-site the day of the event and having 36 participants, the most registered in one team.

“They are a silver sponsor which means that the company gave $2,500 and then on top of that they had over $4,000 in fundraising as a team, so all together DiamondJacks contributed $6,686.65 to Relay,” Fowler said.

A meeting will be held Sept. 14 at Porters Chapel United Methodist Church to decide committee positions for the coming year and to plan the fall kick-off of the fundraising event season in October or November. A volunteer training day for committee members will be held in Meridian on Oct. 3. The purposed 2016 event day will be Friday, April 29.

The next fundraiser, Lights of Hope, will be planned in August.

Lights of Hope is a luminaire memorial fundraiser to honor and remember those who have won and lost their battle with cancer that occurs around Christmas.

Fowler said she is looking forward to getting started planning the upcoming event year and possibly creating additional fundraisers throughout the year to supplement the Relay for Life income for next year.
