The editorial staff of The Vicksburg Post received awards from two organizations Saturday, earning recognition from the Associated Press and the Mississippi Press Association.
During the Saturday presentations in New Orleans, The Post received awards in the Mississippi Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest and the Louisiana/Mississippi Associated Press Managing Editors annual contest.
The awards were presented at the Loews Hotel in New Orleans, the site of the 2015 Mississippi Press Association’s Summer Convention.
“We often say that what we do every day is not for awards, but rather for the thousands of readers we have each day,” Post publisher Tim Reeves said. “But, it is always nice to have your work recognized by your peers.”
In the APME competition, which included daily, community newspapers in Mississippi and Louisiana, The Post won 11 awards, including a first place award for Post report Josh Edward’s series on Freedom Summer.
The entries judged were from work produced in 2014.
The newspaper was also the recipient of the APME’s Mark Twain award, recognizing the newspaper for its many contributions to the Associated Press service.
In the MPA’s Better Newspaper Contest, which also judged work produced in 2014, The Post earned 15 awards, including two first place awards.
Post photographer Justin Sellers received a first place award in Best Spot News photography, while Edwards received a first place award in Best Feature Photography.
“We truly appreciate the recognition from both the APME and the MPA,” Reeves said. “We have been a long-time members of both organizations and believe strongly in the work they both do to promote journalism in both Mississippi and Louisiana.”
