Vicksburg Theatre Guild hosted the first night of their Fairy Tales Theater production Thursday.
The weekend of performances began with a play called, “My Sister, The Dragon” and followed up Thursday night with two plays called, “Billie Jo and Seven Dwarves” and “Not Another Fairy Tale Play.”
The series of plays are the finale for Vicksburg Theatre Guild’s 2014-2015 season and ends on a sweet note with the Fairy Tale plays.
“It’s an exciting and relaxing time for me,” Fairy Tales director Jo Beth Britt said. “Each play is an entity in itself and it really is something I’m excited about seeing.”
Auditions for Fairy Tales began in late April and 52 kids made the cut. The beauty of Fairy Tales is that everyone who tries out for the plays make the cut, Britt said.
“It’s a welcoming environment,” Britt said.
“Just seeing the kids struggle at first coming in, then seeing them become great performers and comfortable in this environment makes it all worth it.”
Britt said Fairy Tail theater audtions are one of her favorite times of the year.
She has been involved with theater since her days in junior high school and has been doing Fairy Tales for over 20 years and has been in charge of the productions for 10 years.
Seeing her help put together a string of plays and getting young kids involved with theater is what makes Fairy Tales special.
Britt compared producing and making Fairy Tales to her involvement with Salvation Army. Both have had a significant part on her life in many ways, she said.
“It’s something that grabs your heart,” Britt said.
“Doing Fairy Tales became a part of my life. It’s helping the community and it makes it all worth while for me.”
