The way things played out, Joel Greer probably had the Clear Creek Club Championship won after the first round. He made sure, however, that he wouldn’t come close to losing it in the second.
Greer birdied the first hole to get going and used a deft putting touch to shoot a 73 on Sunday — tied for the lowest round of the day — to preserve his lead and win the tournament by five shots at Clear Creek Golf Course.
The 31-year-old also had the low round of the tournament, a 68 on Saturday, and was never seriously threatened as he carded a two-day total of 141. Herby Poole was second, at 146, after shooting his second consecutive 73 on Sunday.
“It just kind of all came together this weekend. I putted pretty well,” Greer said. “Today, I grinded some. Herby outplayed me today. I just made some putts when I needed to make them.”
Greer’s only hiccup came on the ninth hole, when he accidentally tapped the ball while addressing it and took a penalty stroke. He made a total of 10 birdies in the 36-hole tournament.
Entering the final round with a big lead brought its own kind of pressure, but Greer made birdie on the first hole and was off and running.
“It was kind of a grind today, but it helped having a five-shot cushion. I could play some golf,” Greer said.
Gabriel Riveros was third in the championship flight with a two-round total of 148. He shot a 73 in the first round and 75 on Sunday.
Channing Curtis was fourth, at 156, and Mike Hurley fifth at 157.
For his victory, Greer won a $100 gift certificate to Clear Creek’s pro shop and a spot on the Warren County Cup team later this summer.
The Warren County Cup is a Ryder Cup style event that pits Clear Creek club members and Vicksburg Country Club members against each other.
In the Clear Creek Club Championship, the top nine scores after the first round advanced to the championship flight and the remaining golfers were placed in a consolation flight.
Jim Warren finished with a 159 to win the first flight, while Rocky Shiers was second at 163.
In the club’s Senior Championship, Bob Walters overcame a second-round 79 to beat Rodney McHann by two shots.
Walters finished with a total of 153, while McHann was at 154. Hugh Hasty and Joe Grayson tied for third, at 159.
