The nephew of a Vicksburg man charged with capital murder in the death of a 69-year-old woman was released Thursday without being charged.

Vicksburg Police Capt. Sandra Williams said no charges “would be filed at this time” against 20-year-old Akeem McCloud, whose uncle was charged Wednesday with capital murder and seven other counts in the abduction and death of Sharen Wilson.

Police say Rafael McCloud, 33, 513 Lynn St., stalked, attacked, tied up and raped Wilson before taking her to the abandoned Kuhn Memorial Hospital and shooting her in the head with a stolen gun.

Later he attempted to burn down Wilson’s home on Drummond Street, Williams has said.

“We worked extremely hard trying to find any shred of information that would link him (Akeem McCloud) to these horrible acts,” Williams said. “However, we found nothing linking him to the crimes.”

Wilson’s family members were notified of the release Thursday, Williams said.

The decision to release Akeem McCloud came following a discussion with District Attorney Ricky Smith.

“I’ve talked to the DA about it extensively,” Williams said.

Warren County Judge Johnny Price denied bail for Rafael McCloud Wednesday after he was charged with capital murder, rape, sexual battery, possession of a weapon after felony conviction, arson, home invasion and burglary.

At the probable cause hearing during the initial court appearance, Williams said Rafael McCloud watched Wilson as she was locked out of her home at 2502 Drummond St.

“We believe Mr. McCloud watched her take a hidden key and enter the back of the residence,” Williams said during the hearing.

He then used the key to enter the home undetected before attacking, kidnapping and killing Wilson, police have said.

He is accused of attacking the 69-year-old who had lived alone since her husband, Dixon, died three years ago.

The couple had moved to Vicksburg from Hammond, La., after Hurricane Katarina, settling in the purple, single-story house on Drummond Street.

McCloud is also accused of attempting to burn down the home where Wilson lived, leading to the arson charge.

It is believed Wilson was still alive when she was loaded into her 2012 Nissan Murano and driven about a mile and a half to the abandoned Kuhn Memorial Hospital. Drag marks and a blood trail at the crime scene indicate that she was taken inside the overgrown facility.

Wilson was apparently shot with a .40-caliber pistol that Rafael McCloud admitted to stealing during a May 31 burglary in the 1000 block of First East Street, police said.

McCloud has prior felony convictions for auto burglary, grand larceny and armed robbery, according to court records.

The murder case against Rafael McCloud is expected to be presented to the October term of the Warren County grand jury.

The killing is the fourth homicide reported this year in Vicksburg. No homicides have been reported in Warren County.
