Warren Central players win tennis tournaments

Some of Warren Central’s top tennis players teamed up to dominate the competition Saturday in Brandon.

George Wilkerson and Alex Velazquez cruised to a pair of victories, 8-0 and 8-2, to win the 16-and-under boys doubles championship at the Castlewoods Junior Challenge.

Another WC player, Joseph Jabour, teamed with Starkville Academy’s Will Christiansen to win the 18-and-under boys doubles title. They won their two matches 8-5 and 8-0.

The Jabour-Christiansen pairing broke up for the singles bracket, and Jabour got the better of it. He rallied from a rough showing in the first set to beat Christiansen 0-6, 6-3, 10-5 in a three-set thriller.

In other singles matches, Wilkerson and Hannah Hopson won the consolation finals in their respective age groups, and Velazquez finished third in the 16-and-under boys bracket.

Hopson competed in the girls 12-and-under division.
