Vicksburg YMCA is beginning the search for a new executive director.

Executive director Casey Custer stepped down from the position last week. Previous executive director Herb Wilkinson stepped in as interim director while the search is on for a replacement.

“I’m just glad to be back and be of service to this YMCA that’s meant so much to me for so many years,” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson retired from the position three years ago and was working Monday to get adjusted on his first day back. He never saw himself returning to the position he once held.

“I’m getting my feet under me again, wearing long pants,” Wilkinson said.

The YMCA is moving forward and focusing on not letting the change affect any of their programs.

“We’ve got a wonderful staff that’s in place and is carrying on the programs and administration of the YMCA,” Wilkinson said. “Our programs are moving forward with youth sports, childcare and so many others. We’re going to do all we can do to sustain the operation at a high level.”

Right now, YMCA officials are not sure how long the interim appointment will last. A search committee will meet this week to discuss the application process and how long the search will continue. Eventually, the committee will start conducting interviews.

“We have a search committee that’s been appointed and is meeting this week, beginning the process to identify and secure a new executive director,” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson said he is not a part of the search committee and can’t say what they are looking for in a candidate, but he explained the position’s responsibilities of answering to the board of directors and employing the Vicksburg YMCA’s facilities.

“He’s responsible to the board of directors and in turn employs additional staff to carry out the mission of the YMCA in this community,” Wilkinson said.

As for the future of the YMCA, Wilkinson said it is ever-changing and will continue to fulfill the needs of the community.

“The Y is always evolving, moving forward and expanding,” Wilkinson said. “We’re very fortunate to have a YMCA the community loves and supports. It’ll continue to meet emerging needs as we move forward under new executive leadership.”
