Local woman hosts one-week boutique

Brand name items are on sale for discounted prices in Vicksburg Saturday.
Sassy Seconds Vicksburg began their public sale Friday and will continue Saturday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. at 121 Thalweg Rd.
“I like to call it a one-week boutique because that’s what we are, we set up, have the sale for a few days and then close up,” owner Sarah Britton said.
This is the fourth year Britton has had her biannual consignment sale in Vicksburg.
Starting Saturday, many items will be half off the tag price. The cosigners who are selling the items choose whether or not the item gets marked down.
The sale offers mostly children’s clothing and shoes, but there are also DVDs, books, toys, maternity clothes, strollers, bouncers and other items. The weekend sale is targeted toward fall and winter clothing with a number holiday themed items.
By Friday afternoon they had already condensed two large rooms worth of items down to a single room.
Lead volunteer Julie Lambert said they have name brand items available for $10 that where originally priced at $60. The philosophy, according to other lead volunteer Denise Ratliff, is why spend so much money on children’s clothes when they are constantly growing.
“A lot of it [the clothing] has tags on them and they’re brand-new,” Ratliff said. “Some of it the kids wore one time, especially the seasonal clothes.”
About 67 families cosigned items for this sale.
“We have middle-class families who cosign, we have lower income, but it’s a great way to still dress your kids nice, but not having to pay the full amount for it,” Britton said. “You have a champagne taste on a sippy cup budget.”
Nancy Smith came to the sale to shop for her grandchildren. She heard about the sale years ago through Facebook and decided to shop Friday during her lunch break for clothes and shoes.
“I have three grandbabies and, to help my children out, I like to shop for them,” Smith said. “I’m probably going to stop after work and buy toys.”
Ratliff bought her children’s whole winter wardrobe at the sale and said she is addicted.
“We need this in Vicksburg so bad,” Denise said.
Britton started Sassy Seconds Vicksburg four years ago after realizing there weren’t any consignment sales in the Vicksburg area. She use to travel to Jackson with friends to shop consignment bargains, but decided Vicksburg needed it’s own place and undertook the endeavor.
“We all shopped at the ones in Jackson before this because there are several in Jackson, but we wanted to be able to do it here in town instead,” Lambert said.
Britton calls it a family business with a lot of help from her husband loading racks and tables.
“Financially it helps out a little bit, but it’s just a fun thing to do, it helps the community, helps my family, helps other people,” Britton said.
People who want to sell items can tag, price and label their items from home. VIP tagging was offered to parents who didn’t have time to do it themselves. Lambert priced and organized those items for the sale, which filled up her van.
Britton met her lead volunteers Lambert and Ratliff through the Mothers of Preschoolers organization. A number of other volunteers also work to put the consignment event together.
“I could not do it without these ladies because I have about, give or take, 25 to 30 volunteers throughout the whole week and the community is just great,” Britton said.
Volunteer who cosign items will earn a percentage of the revenue from their sold items and they get to shop early. An exclusive pre-sale began on Thursday for cosigners, volunteers and new moms. Volunteers receive 70 percent of their items sold, cosigners get 65 percent of their items sold and people who get VIP tagging will receive 50 percent.
Cosigners can choose to donate any of their items that don’t sell, or they can pick them up Monday afternoon. Many of the donated items go to the Center for Pregnancy Choices or Lifting Life Ministries among other organizations.
Around 4 or 5 vendors, like a bouncy house company, will be on-hand Saturday to advertise their businesses.
The next sale will feature spring and summer clothes in either February or March at a to be determined location. For more information, visit sassysecondsvicksburg.com.
