Vicksburg volleyball takes first loss of year

An historic undefeated start of the season for Vicksburg High’s volleyball team was snapped in three sets Tuesday night.
A strong effort by Ridgeland and bad in-game luck led to the Missy Gators’ first loss 25-11, 25-5, 25-14.
“It just didn’t fall our way,” head coach Aimee Scribner said. “They played the game to the best of their ability and the scoreboard didn’t show what happened on the court. I couldn’t have asked them to play better.”
Sitting with an overall 3-1 record, the Missy Gators are now 1-1 in their division, despite playing a solid match on defense and offense and developing team communication.
Vicksburg had opened the season with one win over Canton and two more in a doubleheader against Yazoo County. It was the first time in the five-year history of the program that it won consecutive games, or even a best-of-three games match.
The first set the Missy Gators played was a neck-and-neck nail bitter, but the bottom fell out late. The third game was a similar nerve wrecking experience as the first, but the girls played with intensity throughout the end.
“The girls never quit or never gave up, they had good sets, good hits, and good matches. When I say the bottom fell I mean the times didn’t go our way. The point system just didn’t go our way.”
While the team might have been defeated, several Missy Gators had an impact in Tuesday’s game.
“Destiny Allen stood out real well with her sets. Jade Douglas stood out with her amazing digs and saved the team on the back row,” Scribner said. “Allen and Maya Clay were stone walls defending the net with at least four blocks.”
The Missy Gators cost themselves some points because of miscommunication, but the team is now calling out to other girls before diving for loose balls and setting up plays.
They’ll travel to Germantown Thursday and face another tough matchup. Scribner has no doubt her team can compete with them, but they have to get used to the competition level.
“I’m just very proud of these girls,” Scribner said. “Hopefully at the end of the season Vicksburg is a name that sticks with a bunch of people so we’ll see how it goes.”
