“Due to the current declining business conditions, the company has decided to substantially reduce its operations at the Vicksburg facility,” Clay Masters, the senior human relations manager for Cameron wrote. “As a result, we anticipate that we could potentially permanently layoff up to as many as 222 employees, beginning as early as November, 2, 2015.”

A listing of jobs potentially affected by layoffs includes 63 welders, 19 production operators and field service specialists and 17 inspectors, among dozens of other positions.

“I know with the oil industry as it is right now, it’s making it very hard for those companies,” said Wayne Mansfield, the executive director of the Warren County Port Commission, which is the county’s economic development agency.

In May the board of supervisors approved a tax year 2015 personal property tax break for Cameron on new equipment and machinery valued at $1.816 million.

They plan to rescind their approval if the layoffs go forth.

“You really only approved the preliminary resolution. The Department of Revenue has yet to send anything back to show they meet eligibility,” Chancery Clerk Donna Hardy told the board. “You don’t have to accept.”

District 5 Supervisor Richard George said the county has denied final approval of tax exemptions after giving initial approval.”

“They weren’t happy about it, but we did it,” he said.

The announcement comes less than a week after the Houston, Texas-based oil service company Allrig announced the closing of its Vicksburg facility. About 50 percent of the workforce at most of the larger employers in Warren County come from Claiborne, Sharkey, Issaquena and Yazoo counties, Mansfield said, meaning shutdowns and layoffs have a far-reaching impact.

“So many of the people who work in our industries, it suddenly has a negative impact regionally,” Mansfield said.

Cameron acquired the former LeTourneau plant, which began as a munitions manufacturer in 1944.

The company designs, builds and supports equipment for the mining and oil and gas drilling industries, in September 2011 from Milwaukee-based mining company Joy Global for $375 million in cash. Joy Global had acquired LeTourneu earlier that year.
