A Vicksburg man is being accused of raping a child in Vicksburg early Tuesday.

Vicksburg Police Capt. Sandra Williams in a press release issued late Tuesday afternoon said James Jefferson Jr., 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with statutory rape.

A child under the age of 14 was sexually assaulted in the 1900 block of Sky Farm Avenue and taken to Merit Health River Region Medical Center Tuesday, Williams said.

The assault was reported at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday and the child was treated and released from the hospital, Williams said.

Jefferson is being held at the Issaquena Correctional Facility and will make his initial court appearance in Vicksburg Municipal Court Wednesday, Oct. 28.
