Last call for bras.
Riverwalk Casino is wrapping up their month and a half long Bras for Breast Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at the Making Strides 5K Walk this weekend in Jackson.
To celebrate Riverwalk’s seventh birthday the casino strung 1,100 of the collected bras and hung them on posts down the hill from Warrenton Road to the casino. It took a little less than two hours in the rain for a team of people to string up the bras by hooking their clasps together. Mary Hudson, marketing manager at Riverwalk, said they plan to do it again next year.
Those same bras combined with bras donated at locations across Vicksburg will be strung along the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides 5K walk route this weekend in Jackson.
This is the eighth year the casino has asked the community to collect bras for a cause and each year it grows larger.
“We’ve partnered for this event from the start,” Jan Michaels of iHeartMedia said, adding the first year they collected a total of about 1,200 bras. They didn’t know if people would be interested in joining the collection efforts, but it caught on quick.
“It’s turned into a much bigger event than we ever thought it would be,” Michaels said.
This year’s goal was 25,000 bras, and they will get a grand total Saturday.
Organizers are confident they have beaten last year’s total. iHeartMedia thinks they have at least 10,000 bras not counting the other drop off points or Riverwalk’s displayed bras.
All of the bras will be donated to different organizations like The Good Samaritan Center, women’s shelters and The Salvation Army.
“There’s not a single bra that goes to waste,” Michaels said.
Each bra donated results in a $1 donation from Riverwalk to the American Cancer Society. Proceeds from pink long-sleeved T-shirt sales at Riverwalk also go towards their donation. A check presentation will take place at the walk.
Chris Williams, senior director of marketing at Riverwalk, said they would still take bras a little late.
“Even if people want to still bring it in the first weekend of November, we’ll accept them,” Williams said. “A lot of people will bring them to the walk, which is fine.”
Michelle Hill from the American Cancer Society was also on hand at the birthday celebration Wednesday in a pink car to support the bra collecting efforts.
“I came here with the central Mississippi Chevy dealers pink strides Camaro, and I am so exited to support our partners at iHeartMedia and Riverwalk,” Hill said. “We are exited to see everyone at the walk on Saturday. We will be there rain or shine, and the bras will be there too.”
The walk will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 and sign up is free. There will be lots of giveaways at the Riverwalk tent located by the start/finish line to people who join the walk.
A 20-member Riverwalk team has signed up for the walk so far, and Hudson hopes more will join. She has asked the businesses who collected bras to join the team as well as the entire Vicksburg community.
“We would love, like I’ve said from the very beginning, a good support for Vicksburg,” Hudson said. “So as many from Vicksburg I think would just be awesome. Right now we’re doing really well compared to last year.”
