For the past 16 years, Vicksburg native Adam Farlow and his family have been living in London, England, where he is a lawyer with Baker & McKenzie, the largest law firm in the world.
After graduating from Warren Central High School, Farlow received a business degree from the University of Mississippi and his law degree from Yale Law School.
Farlow describes his practice as a combination of U.S. and English law with a focus on helping companies in emerging markets to gather funding. He added during the financial crisis when all the banks were failing, Lehman Brothers was his biggest client.
Farlow has also appeared on CNBC and Sky News.
“I typically am on (television) commenting on what is happening in the capital markets either more generally or with respect to specific deals like when the Alibaba happened. I appeared a few times to talk about that IPO, but usually I’m just in to talk about something interesting happening in the capital markets more broadly.”
Farlow, who is the son of Gene and Susie Chatham and the late David Farlow, said because of all his traveling, living in England is more conducive than living in the U.S.
“I spend a lot of time in Russia, Ukraine and Nigeria, helping their companies do either bond offerings or to do IPOs, and I also spend some of my time helping companies that find themselves in financial difficulties,” he said.
Farlow married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Rule, and the couple have three children: Tom, 14, Lily, 11, and Sam, 8.
“They were all born in the U.K. and have good proper English accents. I never thought I would have kids that sounded like Harry Potter,” Farlow laughed.
Even though his children are being raised in formal English schools, Farlow said he is proud of his upbringing and hometown.
“I love the fact that I’m from Vicksburg. Abroad, you run into a fair number of New Yorkers or Californians, but very few people abroad have run into Mississippians. So I have a great time of being an ambassador for Mississippi,” Farlow said. “A lot of what I talk about is around the fact that they need to come see Mississippi, and Vicksburg in particular, to get a better taste for what the United States is all about. People will come see just New York or Orlando, and so I am always encouraging people to take that little bit of extra time and come see some place like my hometown to see what the real America is like.”
Farlow and his family make the more than 4,000-mile trek back to Vicksburg for Christmas and sometimes in the summer. When home, he said, “there are fun things I like to do, but the things I have to do are catch up with family and friends and eat crazy amounts of food.”
