Veterans Day to include events, specials

Veterans Day is Wednesday and Vicksburg, a city rich in military history, promises not to disappoint.

The annual parade is at 9:30 a.m. beginning at Belmont Street down Washington Street and ending at Jackson Street.

The Veterans Day Ceremony will be at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Rose Garden on Monroe Street. For more information, contact Willie Glasper at 601-415-7540.

The Vicksburg Convention Center and VenuWorks of Vicksburg plans at 11 a.m. the Liberty luncheon (free for Veterans and $15 for non-veterans) at the Vicksburg Convention Center, 1600 Mulberry Street.

“Nothing has changed; this is the same thing we’ve done for years,” said Eva Ford, president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 3. “That’s a good thing. People know what to expect.”

Space is limited for the luncheon and reservation/tickets are required.

The VNMP is observing Veterans Day by waiving the fee entrance into the park. For more information on this event call 601-636-0583 or visit www.nps.gov/vick.

Vicksburg Catholic School will host a Veterans Day recognition and prayer service in the St. Aloysius Gymnasium at 9 a.m. There will be a guest speaker.

Porters Chapel Academy will host a Veterans Day program in their gym at 1 p.m. for parents and veterans. The program will be lead by fourth and fifth graders.

Warren Central High School will host a program at 2 p.m. to induct veterans into a Hall of Honor, a veterans day breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and a veterans fair from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Vicksburg McDonalds will offer free breakfast to veterans all day long.

Ameristar Casino and Hotel will honor veterans and active duty military personnel with a complimentary meal at the Heritage Buffet Wednesday.

Veterans are invited to enjoy a complimentary lunch or dinner buffet. The Veterans Day appreciation meals are part of a company-wide initiative to show appreciation to veterans and those who are currently serving our country.

“We are excited to have veterans celebrate this special day with us,” said Gerad Hardy, vice president and general manager. “Our team members are looking forward to serving those who have so generously served our country.”

All federal and city offices will be closed Wednesday.
