Holiday gifts focus of next Hit the Bricks

The downtown shops are giving people one last chance to hit the bricks this year.

A third Hit the Bricks and Adjoining Streets event will take place from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12. This year downtown hosted a spring and fall Hit the Bricks, and this week will mark the holiday-themed bash where the stores stay open later and provide treats and entertainment to shoppers.

“The one we just had in the fall just showcased fall home décor,” Lurline Simmons of Crown to Heels said. “This is more geared toward holiday.”

A holiday fashion show starts at 6 p.m. at Crawford Square located between Cinnamon Tree and Peterson’s. Different merchants like Crown to Heels have put together holiday looks to display at the show.

Not only clothing will be represented on stage, but also products like flags by Paper Plus and instruments from Michel’s Music.

“We showcase holiday fashion from basically everything up and down Washington Street from children’s clothes all the way up,” Simmons said. “We have some ladies downtown that carry up to 3x and everything in between.”

Melanie Sanders will serve as the master of ceremonies like she has for every Hit the Bricks fashion show.

Chris Burks will serve as the disc jockey playing holiday songs throughout the evening in addition to broadcasting live on the radio from the event and stopping in each store to let the merchants announce the specials they have.

“We’ll have Richard McComas, he’s The Beatles Guy, he will be playing on the 1100 block for us,” Vicksburg Main Street executive director Kim Hopkins said.

Keystone Antique Furnishings is one of the shops on that block of Washington Street. Even though they don’t have much to offer for the fashion show, the store still supports the event and will be staying open late as well.

“The more we get people to stay open, the better it is for everybody,” Vivian Monistere of Keystone said. “There’s just a lot of synergy we can get from that. We’re pretty committed to it.”

Merchants will also offer refreshments in store. Monistere said she always has candy available for customers, and she might just make some cookies for Thursday night.

“We’ve got a lot of stuff on sale to help people fix up their homes for the holidays,” Monistere said. “Every day we’re putting more stuff on sale. So any kind of decor or furniture or anything they need for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we can help them with a lot of stuff.”

Downtown will be decorated with lights, banners, ornaments and trees in time for the big event.

Simmons said customers are encouraged to use the parking garages. She said the garages have undergone recent updates making them well-lit and secure with cameras, and they have easy access from the walkway that connects the garage straight to Washington Street. Extra police and deputies will be on hand to make sure all goes smoothly and everyone stays in a holiday spirit.

“It’s best to get down here earlier rather than later because of traffic,” Simmons said. She said parking is also available under Trustmark Bank after business hours and she also mentioned the parking garage across from the Senior Center.

“It’s just a fun night for everybody to come down and shop local,” Hopkins said.

Next week the second Downtown at Dusk concert will be held at River Stage Plaza, the parking lot across from Cinnamon Tree, featuring the Ben Shaw Band. After next week, downtown will prepare for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, a Christmas Open House and being open Sundays in December.

“Christmas is right around the corner, and they’ve got all their Christmas merchandise in,” Hopkins said.
