UPDATE: Vicksburg Warren School District officials have been given the go ahead to dismiss students at Vicksburg Junior High and those from Warren Central Junior High who were evacuated to VJH after a bomb threat was received at WCJH.
“We are going to dismiss the Vicksburg Junior High bus students first. Then, all car riders from Vicksburg Junior High and Warren Central Junior High will be dismissed next. That will be followed by dismissal of the Warren Central Junior High bus students,” said Chad Shealy, superintendent of the VWSD.
Shealy said the district definitely would have school tomorrow at all buildings.
The buildings remain locked Wednesday night, but Shealy said Warren Central students should report to their fourth period class when they arrive at school on Thursday morning to gather their personal items. From there, students will go to their homeroom classes as usual.
Shealy said the school went into security response mode immediately upon learning about the bomb and “pulled it off without a hitch. The authorities took over immediately, and they are in charge of the investigation.
At about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, law enforcement detonated what looked to be a homemade improvised explosive device on property surrounding Warren Central Junior High.
The device was brought out of the building by a robot, and detonated using that robot, said Capt. Sandra Williams of the Vicksburg Police Department.
The device is thought to have been brought to school by a Warren Central Junior High student.
Vicksburg Post reporter Alana Norris, who is at the scene, said the explosion sounded like a “gunshot in the woods. It was like a boom sound. A few people in the crowd gasped when they heard it.”
She said a Vicksburg Police officer warned the crowd that officials were about to detonate the device just before it went off.
Williams said officers found the device when a student told them where it was located.
The device was apparently found in the school’s library.
“The bomb dog was at the school searching for the device,” Williams said.
Williams said two students have been detained pending the investigation.
She said the Clinton Police Bomb Squad was summoned to the school to handle the device. Also, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Federal Bureau of Investigations are also on scene.
Vicksburg Warren Schools Superintendent Chad Shealy said because law enforcement continues to do its work, students and faculty at the Warren Central and Vicksburg junior highs are “sheltered in place.” When asked about any alterations to end-of-day bus schedules, Shealy said, “We don’t have any answers right now. We are feeding the kids. Everyone is safe.”
He said he thought the bus schedule for students at other schools would remain on schedule. However, he said he wouldn’t know for certain until he gets more information from law enforcement at the scene.
Students at Warren Central Junior High on Mission 66 were evacuated at around 12:18 p.m. after information was shared with school officials.
“We got some reports we are investigating at this point,” said Chad Shealy, superintendent of the Vicksburg Warren School District. “The report was claiming a student brought something into (the junior high school) that he shouldn’t have.”
Shealy said the school was evacuated and turned over to law enforcement authorities for investigation.
Warren Central Junior High Principal Cedric Magee said the school received a bomb threat. Warren Central Junior High students were evacuated to the Vicksburg Junior High School auditorium while authorities searched the building.
