The National Weather Service has increased its prediction for the Mississippi River’s crest by two feet, from 52 to 54 feet.

According to the latest Weather Service update released at 1:38 p.m. today, the river is projected to reach 54 feet by Jan. 16. At that level, according to the update, water will cover the intersection of Levee Street, North Washington Street, and First East Street.

City and county officials are watching the river, and plans are already underway to begin closing the floodwall at South and Crawford streets, and other open areas along Levee Street.
