Mississippi Symphony Orchestra to hold candlelight concert Sunday

The music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been entertaining audiences for centuries, with the child prodigy composing more than 600 works throughout his lifetime.

His compositions have included symphonies, concertos, and operas. On Sunday, locals will have the opportunity to experience some of the Austrian composer’s creations during the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra’s candlelight concert at The Church of the Holy Trinity.

“This is the 10th year that MSO has been offered by the Four Seasons of the Arts for this candlelight performance to the Vicksburg community and only the third time in the 10 years that a program has been totally Mozart,” representative of the Four Seasons of the Arts Dorothy Brasfield said.

“This itself is very notable since everyone enjoys Mozart,” she said.

Under the direction of conductor Crafton Beck, the MSO will perform some of Mozart’s finest symphonies, the Rev. Beth Palmer said. Selections will include “Overture to Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio,” “Serenade for Winds in E flat” and “Symphony No. 35 in D major” also called the Haffner Symphony, which will include Turkish instruments.

The “ Oboe Concerto in C major” will also be performed and features MSO principal oboe player, Julie Hudik.

Hudik is a native of Ohio with degrees in music performance from Kent State University and Baylor University, Palmer said.

Volunteers will assist in placing the more than 200 candles inside the nave, illuminating the historic church and its six Tiffany stained glass windows.

Though challenging to orchestrate, Brasfield said the atmosphere is one she thinks Mozart would have delighted in.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at 920 South St. and is free, but donations are encouraged.
