As the Lenten season draws to a close, one local church is celebrating through song.
Crawford Street United Methodist Church, 900 Crawford St., will have a Palm Sunday musical program called Amazing Love: Recalling Christ’s Sacrifice at 10:55 a.m. Sunday. The free concert is open to the community.
“It’s a worship service and celebration of Jesus’ gift to us,” Jane Bird Joseph, the church’s organist, said.
The church’s Chancel Choir is teaming up with musicians, students and teachers, from Mississippi, Louisiana and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in Jackson.
“The fact that this church assimilates these professional musicians, and otherwise, to produce this is a huge offering, a huge gift, to the community. And it’s big deal to do this kind of quality musical performance,” Joseph said.
The show features six songs. The last song is called “Amazing Love,” which director of music Kathy Mahloch said is about Christ dying for the sins of the world.
“It talks about Christ’s crucifixion and the love he has for us,” Mahloch said.
She said three pieces of music will highlight the orchestra and will feature Joseph on the piano. Narrators will be Paul Barnes and Kristy Ehrgott, and tenor soloist will be Elizabeth Thornton.
“It’s a very worshipful program and puts the focus where it should be on Sunday,” Joseph said.
Mahloch said the choir and orchestra have a musical program every Palm Sunday and every Christmas.
“We do two cantatas a year,” she said.
Mahloch said the choir had been working on the show since Feb. 1 and Wednesday night was the first time members of the orchestra joined the choir to practice. Sunday morning even more musicians will round out the orchestra and will get in one quick practice before the performance.
“We put it together Sunday morning,” Mahloch said.
Joseph said the show is the church’s gift to the city of Vicksburg that highlights the gift of Christ’s sacrifice. Mahloch hopes the community will attend the show and that the church will be full of people.
“I think it’ll be a good Lenten experience as they remember Christ’s suffering for each one of us,” Mahlock said.
The Amazing Love: Recalling Christ’s Sacrifice show is by Lloyd Larson and Joel Raney.
