Ole Miss, USM pick up baseball wins

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Michael Fitzimmons hit a two-run home run, and Ole Miss never trailed in beating Tennessee 6-4 on Saturday to even their Southeastern Conference baseball series at a game apiece.
The finale of the three-game series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
Fitzsimmons finished with two hits, Tate Blackman drove in two runs, and Henri Lartigue scored twice for the Rebels (17-2, 1-1 SEC), who bounced back after losing on a walk-off hit on Friday night.
Holt Perdzock’s RBI double in the second inning helped Ole Miss jump out to a 3-0 lead, and it never trailed. Fitzsimmons’ homer in the sixth made it 5-2 after Tennessee (12-6, 1-1) had closed the gap.
Ole Miss starter Chad Smith struck out seven and allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings, but didn’t pitch long enough to get a decision. Brady Feigl, who threw 2 1/3 innings of relief, got the win.
Closer Wyatt Short struck out the side in the ninth inning for his fifth save.
Southern Miss 3, Marshall 2
Chuckie Robinson’s RBI double in the top of the eighth inning brought in the go-ahead run, and Southern Miss held on to beat Marshall 3-2 Saturday.
Nick Dawson had three hits for Southern Miss (16-5, 2-1 Conference USA), while Jake Sandlin had two and Tim Lynch was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Kirk McCarty struck out nine batters in 6 2/3 innings for the Golden Eagles, but left with the game tied and didn’t factor into the decision. Nick Sandlin pitched two innings of relief for the win, and Cody Livingston got the final out for his fourth save.
Hunter Slater hit a solo home run for USM. Reynaldo Pastrana hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning for Marshall (10-8, 1-2) that tied the game at 2.
