Plenty to look forward to this week

Late last week was marred with storms, falling trees and power outages across the county. Now that the city is back up and running, citizens have a lot to look forward to in the coming days.
The week kicks off with Mellow Monday at the Vicksburg Convention Center, 1600 Mulberry St. The staff of the convention center is giving back to the community through this event. As a sign of gratitude, the convention center along with VenuWorks of Vicksburg are offering a night of free hors d’oeuvres and music for the public to unwind from 5 to 7 p.m.
This is the first ever Mellow Monday event at the convention center and a second date is already scheduled for Monday, May 23. This event seems like a great opportunity to meet new people and connect with friends, sample delicious food made by Palmertree Catering and relax to mellow music by Mark Holdiness, Mark McCann, Tabitha Newton and Kimble Slaton.
Another music event is coming to town in just a few days.
The Americana in Mississippi Music Tour will be in Vicksburg Thursday night at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium. The free tour with Rambling Steve Gardner and The Jericho Roadshow will make a total of 16 stops in different cities around Mississippi during March and April to promote the Americana Music Triangle.
The music triangle connects Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans, covering the vast majority of Mississippi — and also a little place that is near and dear to my heart, Muscle Shoals, Ala. Within the triangle are several road trips, which can be found at americanamusictriangle.com, designed to hit musical landmarks in the five southern states the triangle covers— Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana and Arkansas.
While exploring the music triangle sounds like a fun vacation, those not able to leave Vicksburg can get a taste of the musical landscape by attending the free concert. The Patrick Smith Acoustic Quartet, a local band, will get the show started at 7 p.m.
In addition to the musical shows in town this week, there will also be a number of church services offered throughout this Holy Week.
Yesterday was Palm Sunday and Sunday will be Easter. In between those important dates on the Christian calendar, which depict the events of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, are Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Whether attending church once a year or showing up every time the doors are open, this week will have a variety of days, times and types of services for anyone interested. Some of those services include a drama called “The 12 Other Disciples of Jesus” at 6 p.m. Thursday at Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church or a Eucharist and foot washing service at 6 p.m. Thursday followed by contemplative prayer at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.
Easter egg hunts for children will follow 11 a.m. services Sunday at Mercy Seat and follow 10:30 a.m. services at Word of Faith, just to name a few.
The week will culminate at a 7 a.m. sunrise service on Fort Hill in the Vicksburg National Military Park in conjunction with the Vicksburg YMCA. The service was created to welcome all denominations and is not meant to take the place of regular church services but instead to compliment those services.
It sounds like it is going to be a beautiful week to celebrate life and the first days of spring in Vicksburg.
