Vicksburg National Military Park is asking for the community’s help in sprucing up property and landmarks many have come to know Vicksburg by during its annual Park Day.
The park’s cleanup day will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, and the park encourages anyone who would like to give back to the park to show up and lend a hand.
“Currently what I know we will be doing is painting cannon carriages in the Battery de Golyer at Tour Stop 1,” Park Ranger Will Wilson said. “The thing I think people look forward to the most is we’ve got an interpretive ranger who’s going to give them a little bit of the history of that site and the important role it played in the siege itself. You do get to have that history lesson and make that tangible connection to the site and to this wonderful resource.”
In the past, VNMP has had anywhere from 40 to 80 volunteers turn out to help for similar events. Wilson said depending on how many volunteers attend this year, other projects may evolve
“We have National Public Lands Day, another great event where people come out and volunteer,” he said. “I think that Park Day because it’s in conjunction with the Civil War Trust and many of our visitors are also members of the Civil War Trust, they find it to be a good way to give back.
Anyone is welcome to come out and volunteer, but officials advise participants come dressed for outdoor work and walking.
Long-sleeve shirts and pants that can get dirty are advised, as well as hats, sunscreen and bug spray. Materials will be provided by the park.
“It’s a great way to get involved with the park,” Wilson said. “We have returning volunteers and new volunteers who can come and connect with their national park.”
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at park’s Visitor Center, 3201 Clay St., and work will begin between 8:30 and 9 a.m.
