Dance is an art form that uses body movement to express ideas, feelings and experiences.
This weekend the Propulsion Dance Company will perform at the Strand Theatre and audience members will have the opportunity to see choreographed pieces representing subject matter valued by the company’s members.
“Each person in the company took a turn choreographing a piece on issues that were important to them,” co-founder and dance member Amelia Brame said about the group’s shows, which are scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Propulsion Dance Company is an all-adult group and was the brainchild of Brame and Kimberly Madsen-Thomas, two former dancers, who became friends after both moved to Vicksburg in 2014.
Brame said she and Madsen-Thomas, who are now local dance instructors — Brame with the Debra Franco Preparatory School of Dance and Madsen-Thomas with the Vicksburg Dance Studio — were both seeking ways to dance together and wanted to form a dance troupe for adults.
However, initially both women were not in a position to fulfill their vision until just recently.
“We were both pregnant at the time and then had babies, so nothing really became of it.
“But then I got involved with the Vicksburg Theatre, and she got involved with the Strand, and we met more people who were interested in dancing who were adults,” Brame said.
At the beginning of this year, Brame said a meeting was held with adult dancers she and Madsen-Thomas had met, and during that meeting seven committed to become members of the Propulsion Dance Company.
Since forming, the group has danced at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center’s Raise the Roof talent competition, The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary’s Affairs of the Heart, and this past weekend, the group won the Mirror Ball Trophy at the United Way of Central Mississippi’s fifth annual Dancing with the Vicksburg Stars.
Andrea Tower, a member of the group described it as a contemporary dance company that focuses on a mix of modern, jazz and ballet movements.
“We typically meet on Saturday afternoons for practice,” Tower said.
For former dancers who are still interested in performing, Tower said an audition would be held at some time during the later part of the summer.

“We are really excited to be able to dance as adults,” Brame said, and added the goal of the dance company is to have a professional modern dance company in Vicksburg as part of the local art culture.
“We also would like to do outreach projects like going into schools and helping students learn about creative dance,” Brame said.
The Strand is located at 717 Clay St., and admission is a $5 donation, with a portion of the proceeds going to the downtown theater.
