A Warren County man accused of stealing newspaper racks was held without bail Friday.
Christopher Sabin Reaves, 25, 1780 Glass Road, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Jason Bailess just before noon Friday at a motel on East Clay Street and charged with grand larceny, Sheriff Martin Pace said.
The circulation department of The Vicksburg Post reported at least one newspaper rack had been burglarized at a business on Pemberton Boulevard, he said. Upon investigation, it was discovered the rack did not even belong to The Post but was another box left in the same location, he said.
“It appears the entire Vicksburg Post box was taken and another empty newspaper vending box put in its place that had a coat of fresh red paint on it,” Pace said.
Members of the circulation department surveyed other racks in the area and discovered two more vending racks missing, one of which had also been replaced with a newly painted empty box that did not belong to The Post, he said.
“Investigators reviewed security tapes in the area, and were able to identify a vehicle and develop a suspect,” Pace said.
Investigators went to Reaves’ home where they found freshly painted items as well as piles of Vicksburg Post newspapers burning in the yard, he said; however, Reaves was not home.
Reaves vehicle was spotted in the parking lot of the hotel where he was taken into custody Friday, Pace said.
He said Reaves also has a detainer placed on him by the Mississippi Department of Corrections because he is on probation in Louisiana and is in Mississippi on a compact agreement where the MDOC monitors him while he is in the state.
“He is in the Warren County Jail without the benefit of bond,” Pace said.
