A 27-year-old Vicksburg man had his bond set at $1 million for the second-degree murder of his 62-year-old girlfriend at her Vicksburg home.
Dexter Smith, 27, 119 Roseland Drive, was charged with second-degree murder Wednesday morning before his initial appearance in front of Judge Toni Terrett at 10 a.m. in Vicksburg Municipal Court. Smith was transferred to the Warren County Jail after his bond was set.
“We will not tolerate this type crime,” Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong said, adding he hopes the $1 million bond will serve as a message that crimes like this will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in order to have a safe community.
Smith is accused of killing Mary Warren, 62, 119 Roseland Drive, during a domestic argument at Warren’s home, which started Sunday night and went into Monday, Armstrong said.
“One of the things that any law enforcement hates to see is someone murdered,” Armstrong said.
Warren was found dead Monday by fire department paramedics responding to a 12:15 p.m. E911 medical call at her home. The medics immediately notified police.
Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey pronounced her dead at the scene, and Smith, Warren’s live-in boyfriend, was taken into custody. He was questioned Monday and Tuesday and was held at the Issaquena County Correctional Facility before being charged Wednesday.
Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams commended all the investigators, especially investigator Eddie Colbert, for their hard work and diligence in getting the information that ultimately led to Smith being charged.
“This was a horrific crime,” Williams said. “The investigators put forth a lot of hours in processing the crime scene and talking to the defendant.”
Warren’s body was sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab in Jackson for an autopsy, where the state medical examiner ruled the death a homicide and listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the victim’s head.
Officers also collected items at the scene for evidence and sent them to the crime lab to determine what was used to cause Warren’s death.
“We will know more as time goes on,” Armstrong said.
This is the first homicide in the city of Vicksburg in 2016.
