Rebels rout Vanderbilt, cruise into SEC semis

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — The way Ole Miss is playing in the Southeastern Conference Tournament, it might not want a break. It’s earned one, though.
Colby Bortles drove in four runs and Henri Lartigue scored three times as the Rebels routed Vanderbilt 12-9 on Thursday and advanced to the tournament semifinals.
Ole Miss (43-16) built a 10-0 lead through 5 ½ innings before hanging on late. It’ll have Friday off and face the winner of an elimination game between Vanderbilt (43-16) and Texas A&M (42-14) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
“I thought we played really well tonight,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “At the end you look how close it was, and I don’t think the box score should take away how well we played tonight. It was one of those days where you’re trying to save some pitching and go at people.”
Ole Miss has scored 27 runs in its first three tournament games. It reached double digits in back-to-back tournament games for the first time in school history.
Nine different Rebels recorded a hit as they finished with 13. The middle of the order once again came up big.
Lartigue had his second straight game with at least three hits, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Bortles hit two doubles that produced a career-high four RBIs, increasing his doubles total to 21 on the season. J.B. Woodman belted his SEC-leading 14th home run of the season, his ninth over the last 16 games.
They shelled Vanderbilt starter Jordan Sheffield for nine runs, five of them earned, in five innings.
“Our guys are just going out there and having quality at-bats. That’s all we ask out of everyone in the lineup,” Lartigue said. “We were just getting some really good pitches to hit. Guys like J.B. (Woodman) and Colby (Bortles) were able to put good swings on the balls and not miss. That’s good for us. With a guy like Sheffield on the mound, who has a power arm, if he gives you pitches to hit you have to take advantage of it.”
Bortles hit an RBI double in the second inning and drove in three more runs with a bases-loaded double in the fifth. J.B. Woodman added a solo homer in the third.
Ole Miss starter James McArthur (6-1) allowed three runs, two earned, in 5 1/3 innings.
“We’re proud of James (McArthur), who hasn’t started in two weeks. To come out in this type of environment and pitch like that was certainly a huge lift for our players,” Bianco said. “The original plan coming in to this game was getting the third game and thinking it would be good to pitch McArthur. We needed him to have a start with success because he hadn’t had a start in a few weeks. It would give Chad (Smith) a couple of days rest also. I was confident in him obviously; you don’t run a guy out there unless you think he can be successful.”
Bryan Reynolds, who hit a solo homer in the sixth, and Jeren Kendall each had three RBIs for Vanderbilt, which left 13 men on base.
Kendall went 3-for-6 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Reynolds also had three hits.
Vanderbilt scored four times in the ninth inning to make things interesting. A two-out RBI single by Reynolds pulled the Commodores to within 12-9, but they never got the tying run to the plate. Alonzo Jones grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game following Reynolds’ hit.
“We got our offense going at least, so that’s a positive. We didn’t get the timely hit early in the game that we got late in the game, but that will come around,” Reynolds said.
