An estimated 200 to 300 people will be walking, running and bridging the gap Saturday.
For the 10th year, Vicksburg will host Living Independence for Everyone’s largest fundraiser, Bridging the Gap Walk/Run/Stroll or Roll-a-thon.
“Number 10 is big. Each year has just gotten bigger,” Shirley Reed, marketing and event coordinator for LIFE, said.
The organization is “dedicated to the empowerment of people with significant disabilities,” according to its website, and since 1993, LIFE has advocated for more than 170,000 individuals across every county in Mississippi with many more to help.
Reed estimated 90 percent of the employees at LIFE have a “seen or unseen” disability.
“We help people transition if they have an accident,” she said. “We also go out and ensure that agencies, schools and stores are all wheelchair accessible.”
The event, Reed said, is the organization’s largest fundraiser for the year, and though it has held similar events at other places, the bridge is the most picturesque, which is why though the organization’s closest office is in Jackson, the event is held in Vicksburg.
She said the event was the first time that though she had grown up in the Red Carpet City of the South, she had ever been on the bridge.
“It’s so beautiful,” she said. “We have a great things right here in Vicksburg, and we don’t utilize them.”
She said all are invited to attend, including children, and she expected people from across the state to make the trip over the bridge, however they choose to do so.
“It’s a non-competitive event,” Reed said. “You can literally just stroll across the bridge.”
Dogs on leashes are even welcome, she added.
Registration for the event is $25 and $20 for groups of more than five. People are welcome to register Saturday, she said.
Event festivities begin at 9 a.m., during which people can register, and people will start heading toward the bridge at 10 a.m., she added.
“We don’t ever want to close down registration,” she said.
