The season just started and hope is lost

Let’s talk football. For me, it is truly the most wonderful time of the year.
The only thing better than college football is March Madness. That tournament — the best tournament in all of sports — is the only thing that sustains me at the end of football season, knowing March is just around the corner.
But this year, for me, this season is a complete failure already. Usually I get to dream for a bit longer than the first three games. I waited nine months for this season to start. This year was going to be the one in which my beloved Fighting Irish of Notre Dame would take it all.
Instead, they are one and three. I’m starting to feel like a Cubs fan: Just wait until next year.
And I’m not alone. Three games into the season and it’s been a weird one for a bunch of us.
I went to bed at halftime of the Ole Miss-Florida State season opener, confident that Ole Miss was on its way to routing the Seminoles with a 21-point lead. Imagine my surprise the next morning when I saw the final score — Ole Miss 34, Florida State 45. Huh?
After a promising start, Ole Miss blew another 21-point lead last week against neighboring state rival Alabama. After launching a valiant comeback attempt, Ole Miss fell to the Tide, 48-43.
Then, two weeks later, Florida State, who was ranked number two in the country at the time, I believe, was taken to the woodshed by Louisville — 63-20. Yep, that’s right. No typo.
Louisville isn’t your typical football powerhouse. Basketball is more its game. However, they have a quarterback this year in sophomore Lamar Jackson who is a game changer. Many think he’s a front-runner for the Heisman.
And what about Mississippi State? More of the same, I’m afraid. State dropped its first game in an embarrassing loss to South Alabama, which was considered by many to simply be a practice game. While the Bulldogs topped South Carolina in its second game, it fell to SEC rival LSU last week, 23-20.
This week, Mississippi State played UMass, who also had a 1 and 2 record.
My Irish lost its first game of the season in double overtime to a very much-improved Texas team. Notre Dame was down by two touchdowns right after the half, thanks to a bone-headed move by coach Brian Kelly, who alternated between quarterbacks Malik Zaire and Deshone Kizer. However, Kizer played most of the second half and brought the Irish back, only to lose in double overtime.
I wasn’t too crushed after that loss. After all, it was the first game and Kizer established himself as the clear quarterback front-runner.
I was even still hopeful after the Irish played Nevada and won 36-10, even though the game was closer than the final score indicates.
But, after last week’s horrific, ugly loss to Michigan State, 36-28, it seems the party’s over.
Maybe next year? A girl can dream.
Why the recap of the college football season so far? Just think of it something like this: Misery loves company.
Hope your team fares well this weekend. And above all else, Go Irish!
