Lt. Cmdr. Marc Massie, an active duty chaplain with the U.S. Navy will deliver the message for the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service at the First Church of the Nazarene, 3428 Wisconsin Ave. The

“His wife grew up in our church, so we’re very familiar with them,” said church member Dwain Butler, adding Massie was recently reassigned to Mississippi.

“He just came back to the states from service in the Western Pacific, and they moved from Washington State to the Gulf Coast, several months ago,” he said. “We knew they were in the area and  asked him about his availability to speak at some point.”

Massie, has 15 years of service in the Navy, serving as chaplain with both U. S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps units during two combat deployments to Iraq, and deployments in the Arabian Gulf aboard the USS Ramage and USS Mason. He was also on station in Bahrain for a year, and was deployment in the Western Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis.

He is presently assignment as chaplain for the U. S. Naval Construction Group 2 at Gulfpor, and eceived the Military Chaplains Association Distinguished Service Award in 2005.

Massie attended Mississippi State University, Wesley Theological Seminary, and recently received the Ed.D. in higher education leadership from North Central University in Minneapolis.

He is married to Laurie Smith Massie, a Vicksburg native and graduate of Vicksburg High School and Mississippi State University. They have three children.
