Southern Cultural to host variety of summer workshops

The Southern Cultural Heritage Center will be busy this summer offering workshops for all ages.
“We usually get a great response from our camps and classes,” the executive director of the SCHF Stacey Massey said.
“Parents need great activities for their children in the summertime, so these camps and classes are a great way to give kids activities that are fun but they also learn a lot,” Massey said.
Once again Margie Heltzel will lead the “Kids in the Kitchen” classes.
“We started this last summer and it was a big hit,” Massey said.
Last year’s inaugural event was called “Kids in the Kitchen Baking Boot Camp.”
Heltzel has since offered additional seasonal kids cooking classes, which have included themes focused on Halloween, Christmas and Easter.
This summer, the SCHF will offer four cooking classes led by Heltzel. She will lead a “Kids in the Kitchen Baking Boot Camp,” a “Cook with Books” cooking class and two sessions of “Food from Around the World.”
Also for children, Massey said, the annual Cre.Activity Summer Camp for Kids, will be held. Certified teachers, Jim and Karen Biedenharn, lead the camp.
“During this camp children will split their time between art and activities such as fencing, snowball, volleyball, yard darts and silly team sports,” Massey said, and “the art will be crafty and centered on fun such as crushed can art, splatter art, painting, and shrinky dink projects.” Snacks will also be provided daily.
The annual SCHF Multicultural Art Camp for Kids will run June 19 through 23.
“During this unique camp, children discover the art, dance, music and cuisine of three different cultures by studying cultural differences and similarities through the arts,” Massey said.
“Students will also learn new artistic techniques while developing an appreciation for the traditions and customs of others,” she said.
Serving as the art instructor is Karen Biedenharn and Eleana Davis will serve as the music teacher.
The camp will culminate with a public performance and exhibit on the last day in the SCHF Auditorium, and all family and friends are invited to attend.
A cooking workshop, a stained glass workshop and “More Than a Painting” workshops are scheduled for adults.
The SCHF, 1302 Adams St. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the diverse cultural heritage of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the Mississippi Delta, and the American South. The Foundation works to achieve its goals by creating and hosting cultural activities at the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex.
