The Vicksburg Police Department is investigating a fatal accident that happened Tuesday morning on Highway 61 North.

Officer Russell Sumrall, accident reconstruction officer with the Vicksburg Police Department, said that at approximately 11 a.m., VPD received a call of a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 61 North and North Washington Street.

Vicksburg Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services were also dispatched and upon arrival found a Ford F-150 in a deep gully. The truck was hauling a flatbed trailer with a four-wheeler.

Sumrall said there were two occupants in the vehicle. Vicksburg Police Chief Milton Moore identified the driver as Landon Overstreet, 19, of Clinton who was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, 19-year-old Christopher Fortenberry of Pearl, was transported to Merritt Health River Region Hospital and later life-flighted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson where his condition was unknown.

Sumrall said the initial investigation indicates the driver, who was heading south on Highway 61 North, ran off the road and into the ravine where he crashed into a concrete culvert.
