Delores “Dee Dee” Coomes

Delores “Dee Dee” Coomes died Feb. 8, 2018, at 7:45 p.m. She was 86.
She was born in Gulfport and lived in Vicksburg for the remainder of her life. She was the daughter of the late Tofet Nohra and Minnie Farris Nohra. She was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Billy Coomes Sr. and her daughter, Margaret Renee Coomes.
She is survived by ten children, Mike Coomes (Jane), Donna Steinriede, Ken Coomes (Janet), Bobby Coomes, Evelyn Weaver (Mike), Billy Coomes Jr. (Monica), Lori Williams (John), Caroline Sanders (Chris), John Coomes (Kim) and Michelle Cox (Michael). She leaves 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She worked as director for Vicksburg Catholic School Daycare, she was an advocate for unborn babies since 1973, a chairperson for Respect for Life, charity, social concerns, communications, Angel of Mercy, Catholic Women Auxiliary, child abuse awareness, Octoberfest, Liturgical and Tri Parish social justice and peace. She was an adult advisor for the Catholic Youth Organization. She was a member of the Catholic Diocese of Jackson Search team, director for sponsoring Vietnamese family and a lay minister. She was a chairperson for numerous activities for St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the association Board of Director for Kuhn Memorial Hospital, Halfway House, Carriage House, Children and Youth Clinic, and Youth Counselor. She worked the helpline for over 15 years and was Warren County Right to Life President and Vice President. She helped establish “Human Relations Council”. She was awarded the For God and Youth Medal for the State of Mississippi and Volunteer of the month for the Halfway House.
There will be two visitations. One will be Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Riles Funeral Home. The second visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Riles Funeral Home with a funeral mass at noon at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Pallbearers are grandsons, Michael Coomes, Bill Steinriede, Jordan Coomes, Jamie Coomes, John Weaver, Eric Williams, Aaron Coomes and Brennan Coomes.
Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Shahjahan Sultan, Dr. Lee Giffin, Dr. Murray Whitaker, Dr. Gene Walker, Dr. Phillip Scurria, John Howard Dennis, Pope Benedict XVI, Bishop Joseph R. Kopacz, Bishop William Houck, Bishop Joseph Latino and all Catholic Priests of the Jackson and Biloxi Diocese.
