Three seniors on the Warren Central Lady Vikes golf team will be taking a trip to the most magical place on earth in April, when they travel to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Karley Whittington, Mia Wamsley and Sydney Stuart are going as part of the high school spring training program, and will get to train using Disney’s facilities and golf courses.
Golf coach Matt Williams said he was excited for his team to be selected for the training program.
“They invite different high schools from all over the nation, it’s a huge honor for these three girls for what they’ve done in their high school career,” Williams said. “Them being seniors, hopefully we can get some good training while we’re down there to bring back up here to work on state and region and come out here and play.”
His players were also excited.
“My teammates have become like my family, so it’s going to be a lot of fun to go on like a ‘family trip,’” Wamsley said. “I was really excited to be able to go and experience something new with them and learn with them.”
The Lady Vikes golf team will be hoping some of the magic rubs off on them after their training, as they are hoping the Disney World courses will give them the best preparation for the courses they will compete on at the state tournament.
“We know that when we go to state, when we go play at Sunkist, and it’s probably going to be the toughest course we play at,” Williams said. “It’s totally different than what we’re playing on out here. We haven’t been down there since 2013, and it’s just a different course, different type of greens and looks, and hopefully that’ll help us out when we make that trip down there.”
Stuart said she definitely saw the opportunity for the courses at Disney to help her improve.
“It’s still going to be a challenge, but it’s always going to make me a stronger player and a stronger athlete so I’m going to learn from my mistakes that I have there and I’m going to put them on the courses here for state,” Stuart said.
While the basis for the trip is to improve on their golf skills, the girls are definitely going to take advantage of their surroundings and hit the Disney parks on their off time.
“I’m super excited, I love going and meeting the characters and everything,” Wamsley said.
The team is holding the Fairways Club 4 Man Scramble fundraiser tournament on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 12:30 p.m. at Clear Creek Golf Course to raise money for the trip, as well as equipment for the golf team’s 2018 season.
The cost for an individual entry into the tournament is $75 and a team entry is $300.
There are a number of sponsorships available ranging from $25-1,000. For more information, you can email coachwilliams14@gmail.com.
