Brown and another inmate, Christopher Livingston, escaped from the Hinds County Restitution Center in March of 2016 and made their way to Vicksburg prior to shooting a man and stealing his car from the Blackburn parking lot March 5, 2016, Warren County District Attorney Ricky Smith said.

“They made their way back to Vicksburg. They were both Vicksburg residents who had been convicted of minor crimes,” Smith said. “They had been hiding in the woods over near the Kangaroo and Kentucky Fired Chicken.”

Smith said the pair left the woods and happened upon John Thomas in the parking lot of Blackburn around 10:30 p.m. on March 5, 2016.

“He had stopped in the parking lot of Blackburn Motor Company to look at a truck,” Smith said. “He was thinking about buying a new truck and like a lot of us do, we like to go park at the car lots after hours so we don’t have a salesman.”

Smith said the pair shot Thomas in the hand and the head and stole his 2014 Honda Accord.

The pair was arrested March 12, 2016, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The car was also recovered at the time of the arrest.

Brown was tried and convicted last week in Warren County. Livingston is also facing charges, but will be tried at a later date.

“Prior to trial there was a motion to sever, which means that we have to try them separately,” Smith said.
